North American Computational Linguistics Open (NACLO)

Logic and language puzzles — no linguistics or coding background required.

About this competition

NACLO is a contest of computational-linguistics puzzles: you're given problems in unfamiliar languages (Mayan numerals, Inuit grammar, ancient writing systems) and asked to deduce rules from the patterns. No prior linguistics or programming knowledge is needed — strong logical reasoning is the only prerequisite.

NACLO is one of the most under-the-radar competitions for kids who love puzzles. Top scorers qualify for the U.S. team at the International Linguistics Olympiad. Excellent profile-builder for CS, linguistics, and cognitive-science admissions.
