Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS)

The nation's oldest and most prestigious science research competition for U.S. high-school seniors. Down to 40 finalists; top prize $250,000.

About this competition

The Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS) is the oldest and most prestigious high-school science research competition in the United States. Each year ~1,800 seniors submit independent research projects. The Society narrows this to ~300 Scholars ($2,000 each), then 40 Finalists who present in Washington, D.C. each March.

The Top Award is $250,000. Second through tenth place range from $175,000 down to $40,000. Beyond cash, STS alumni include 13 Nobel laureates, 14 winners of the National Medal of Science, and 2 Fields medalists.

STS is the gold standard for research-track high schoolers. The application requires a 20-page research report submitted in November of senior year. Most successful applicants have ~2 years of mentored research, often via programs like RSI, SSP, or a university lab. Parents whose middle-schoolers are research-curious should start cultivating mentor connections by 9th–10th grade.
