From a first Estes launch to flying hardware NASA reviews
Aerospace is the rare STEM track with a genuine local network behind it. Nearly every state has a rocketry club that launches monthly, lends a student a pad, and signs off on certification flights. This page maps the competitions, the clubs, and the launches worth driving to.
Which aerospace track fits your child?
Three genuinely different entry points. They cost different amounts and they suit different kids.
Model rocketry at home
An Estes starter set, a field, and an afternoon. This is the cheapest real test of whether a child is interested, and it costs less than a month of most activities. Join a local club and the launches become monthly, supervised, and free of the field-permission problem.
Then: the American Rocketry Challenge, which runs on the same kind of rocket.
Space systems on a laptop
Not every aerospace kid wants to sand fins. StellarXplorers and Zero Robotics are orbital mechanics, satellite design, and flight software with nothing to build and nothing to lose in a crash. A school computer lab is the entire equipment list.
Best for: a student who already likes coding or physics and has not connected it to space.
Drones
The Aerial Drone Competition flies small quadcopters in a netted arena in a school gym. It is the cheapest way into aviation competition, works indoors year round, and the autonomous rounds teach genuine flight programming.
Best for: middle schoolers drawn to flight who want to compete this year, not next.

American Rocketry Challenge
The world's largest student rocket contest. Team event for grades 7–12 — design, build and launch a rocket that hits a specific altitude and flight time.
StellarXplorers National Space Challenge
Space-systems design done on a computer — orbits, satellites, and launch vehicles, no hardware budget.
CanSat Competition
Build a satellite that fits in a soda can, then survive a rocket launch and a controlled descent.
International Space Settlement Design Competition
A 40-hour simulated aerospace-industry contract bid, run as an overnight engineering marathon.
NASA HUNCH
Build real hardware and software that NASA actually flies or uses on the ISS.
NASA Student Launch
Nine-month NASA engineering challenge: design, build, and fly a high-power rocket to one mile.
Rocketry clubs by state
A club solves the two problems families hit first: a legal field with an FAA waiver, and someone experienced standing next to your kid at the pad. Most run monthly launches and welcome visitors who have never flown.

Upcoming US launches
Seeing a launch in person is the cheapest way to find out whether a kid is actually hooked. Florida's Space Coast has free public viewing beaches within a few miles of the pads.

How a rocketry student actually advances
Unlike most STEM tracks, rocketry has a formal certification ladder — and it gates what a student is allowed to fly.

Model rockets, no certification needed
Anyone can buy and fly low-power motors (A through D). This covers the American Rocketry Challenge and most school programs. A club membership and a supervised field are the only practical requirements.

Level 1 high-power certification
Required to buy and fly H and I motors. The candidate builds a rocket, flies it successfully in front of club observers, and recovers it undamaged. Both national bodies certify, and many clubs run certification flights at ordinary monthly launches.

Level 2, then Level 3
Level 2 adds a written exam on safety and regulations and opens up J through L motors. Level 3 requires a documented build reviewed in advance. Note that federal law restricts possession of high-power motors to adults 18 and over, whatever certification a student holds, so every youth route into high power runs through a certified adult. NAR runs a Junior High Power Participation Program for ages 14 to 17, and Tripoli's Mentoring Program lets members aged 12 to 17 build and fly under a Senior member and certify as Junior Level 1.

NASA Student Launch and beyond
With a certified mentor and a team, the NASA Student Launch season is the capstone: nine months, formal design reviews with NASA engineers, and a one-mile flight at Marshall Space Flight Center. This is the point where the work starts looking like an engineering job rather than a hobby.
One thing to get right before anything else
Rocketry has a safety code, and clubs enforce it. Never let a student launch outside a club field without checking local fire rules and airspace, never modify a commercial motor, and treat a rocket that failed to ignite as live until an experienced flyer clears it. Clubs are strict about this for good reason, and it is a large part of why joining one beats flying alone in a park.
